Oracle Database 12.2 released
Earlier this year, Oracle made a bold announcement that the next major release, Oracle Database version 12c release 2, would only be available in the cloud.
Oracle’s new release became a big thing since it was first introduced to the public, at Oracle OpenWorld 2015. Although already anticipated in June 2016, Oracle only recently delivered this new major release of its database platform via the new Oracle Database Exadata Express Cloud Service.
Oracle decided on this approach to attract customers that currently run the software in their own data centers and drive cloud services sales.
Oracle customers typically wait for the second release of a database before upgrading to ensure that all the bugs have been fixed. Therefore, Oracle’s decision to have this product available exclusively in the cloud might complicate the buying decision.
