Microsoft 365: Windows OS and Office bundled in one license

This Monday (July 10, 2017) at Inspire, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, revealed their new cloud offering. Microsoft 365 is a subscription which brings together Windows 10 and Enterprise Mobility + Security and Office 365 under one subscription license.

It’s a fundamental change, which aligns with Microsoft’s all cloud strategy. Windows 10 Enterprise was already made available as a subscription for a select group of Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) resellers. However, there was no offering which combined Windows OS with Office 365, designed for all sizes of end user companies.

To address customers of all sizes, from the largest enterprise to the smallest business, Microsoft introduced Microsoft 365 Enterprise (E3 and E5) and Microsoft 365 Business. The Business solution is designed for businesses with up to 300 users and the Enterprise solution is for larger enterprises (> 300 users).

Microsoft 365 Business will be available for public preview starting August 2, 2017. General availability on a worldwide basis is estimated to come in the fall of 2017, with a price of US $20 per user, per month.

As part of the Microsoft 365 unveiling, Satya Nadella introduced five new products, which will be included in Office 365 Business Premium:

Microsoft Connections—A simple-to-use email marketing service.

Microsoft Listings—An easy way to publish your business information on top sites.

Microsoft Invoicing—A new way to create professional invoices and get paid fast.

MileIQ – A mileage tracking app.

Office 365 Business center – A central place where you can manage business apps.

The Microsoft 365 user-based subscription licensing model meets both end user objectives as well as Microsoft’s own objectives.

For end user companies, subscription licenses allow users to access it from multiple devices (up to 5) without an increase in licensing.

A subscription management solution which enables Microsoft 365 users to administer their licenses through a central console designed for device and user management was also integrated.

For Microsoft, this new offering provides a recurring revenue stream, which on the long term will generate more revenue than the traditional perpetual licensing model.

These are exciting new times for cloud enthusiasts, with this all-in-one subscription, of which Microsoft claims it will cut licensing costs.

We will see what changes in cost and licensing will come with Microsoft 365.
